Understanding Your True Nature
You are more than a body. In fact, you’re far more than most of us ever realize.
When you observe yourself, what do you notice? You have a body that moves through space. You have thoughts that flow through your mind. You have emotions that rise and fall. You have a sense of self – an “I” that seems to be the witness to all of this.
But which one is really you?
The Layers of Self
Most of us identify with the outermost layer: the ego, the personality, the collection of traits and preferences and reactions that we think of as “me.”
But the ego is just a construct. It’s a useful one – it helps us navigate the world and interact with others. But it’s not who you fundamentally are.
Below the ego lies something deeper: the mind that generates thoughts, processes information, makes decisions. This is a more sophisticated level of intelligence than the personality. But it too is a tool – one that operates within certain rules and patterns.
But look even deeper, and you find something altogether different. Something that can’t be described in terms of personality, or preferences, or reactions. Something that could be called pure intelligence. Awareness itself. Consciousness unbound by any particular form or limitation.
Pure Intelligence in Motion
This is what animates you. Not in a mystical sense, but in the most literal, scientific sense. The universe, at its core, appears to be consciousness – a unified field of intelligence that expresses itself through infinite forms.
You are that intelligence, temporarily expressing itself as an individual human being. Your body is not the primary thing. Your ego is not the primary thing. These are expressions. Like waves on an ocean. The wave isn’t separate from the ocean. It’s the ocean expressing itself as a wave.
And the moment you truly grasp this – not just intellectually, but in your actual experience – everything shifts.
The Two Modes of Intelligence
This deeper intelligence operates through your mind in two distinct ways:
The Reactive Mind: This operates through your five senses. It perceives what already exists and reacts to it. It’s excellent at processing information about the external world, making practical decisions, and ensuring survival. But it is limited to what is already present.
Most people live almost entirely in the reactive mode. They perceive their circumstances and react. They look at what’s already happened and base their future on that. And so they perpetually lag behind their own potential.
Your Essential Self
Your true nature – what we might call your essential self – is not the personality. It’s the intelligence that creates the personality. It’s the awareness that witnesses the body and the mind. It’s the consciousness that can choose to use its faculties in radically different ways.
You are pure potential. You are the entire universe expressing itself as you. You are far more intelligent, more capable, more creative than your current self-concept allows.
And here’s what actually matters: Unlike your ego, which is limited by your past conditioning, your essential self has access to the full spectrum of human potential. It can learn anything. It can create anything. It can become anything it authentically chooses to be.
Moving Beyond the Ego
This exploration – learning to access the deeper intelligence and move beyond the ego’s limitations – is the most important work you can do.
Because when you access that deeper intelligence, when you learn to operate from the creative mind instead of the reactive one, everything changes. Not just your circumstances, but your fundamental relationship with yourself and with life.
You stop being a creature controlled by your circumstances. You become a conscious creator.
That is the journey we share in these pages.
“You are not trying to become something you’re not. You are uncovering something you’ve always been. The intelligence that creates universes is the same intelligence that creates your thoughts. That’s who you truly are.” — Derek Godfrey
